Our students enter the classroom at age 3 and remain in the same classroom for the following 3 years. Our lead guides hold either an Association Montessori Internationale Primary diploma or American Montessori Society Diploma, as well as a Master’s in Education.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2 to 3 years old Our Dandelion Community prepares the children for their transition into the Primary classroom. Toilet independence is a large part of the experience in the Dandelion classroom. The children acquire many new skills that allow for freedom of movement and the development of the hand. Their environment is rich with opportunities for care of the self and others, food preparation, fine and gross motor activities, vocabulary enrichment, as well as multiple step tasks to increase concentration and focus. Sensory activities, music, and art exploration are a fundamental part of the curriculum as well.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Grace and Courtesy lessons are the foundation for creating a harmonious classroom of mixed ages. The children have a need to know and to absorb the social structures in order to be more at ease in their environment. Grace and Courtesy lessons provide the children the vocabulary, actions, and steps required for them to build their awareness and responsiveness of those around them. This gives the children a better sense of orientation in their social structure. Learning how to push in a chair so others won’t fall, how and when to say ‘excuse me,’ how to introduce oneself, are a few examples of lessons in Grace and Courtesy.</image:caption>

Abstract scientific and cultural concepts are made tangible as children investigate the natural world and manipulate materials and objects in response to images and experiences. Basic nomenclature of biology, geometry, physical science, and geography are also presented. Children gain an awareness of the physical world by exploring materials such as the puzzle maps and geometric solids. The Language component is comprehensive, focusing on spoken language, vocabulary, written language, reading, word study, function of words, and language extensions. Specific exercises build skills in discriminating and analyzing sounds, laying a foundation in phonetic skills that prepare a child for reading. <image:title>Primary Curriculum - Mathematics</image:title>
<image:caption>The math materials provide the children with tangible experiences to move from the concrete to the abstract. Children are first given materials that represent the quantity before quality is introduced. When the child has a firm grasp of quantity, the symbol is then associated to recognize the one to one correspondence of numbers. Children move through the decimal system, skip counting, units through thousands, until the passage to abstraction working with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Primary Curriculum - Practical Life</image:title>
<image:caption>The Practical Life activities are the foundation for all future learning through indirect preparation. The exercises focus on learning how to care for oneself, for others, and for the environment which promotes physical independence, concentration and body control. The activities include many of the tasks children see as part of the daily routine in their homes as well lessons on grace and courtesy. Each is introduced in a sequential, ordered and logical manner, providing the foundation to approach more academic exercises and develop executive functions necessary for all future tasks. These activities help children to internalize order, sequence, and the experience of completion of a task.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Primary Curriculum - Sensorial</image:title>
<image:caption>Young children internalize the world around them through their senses. Using the sensorial materials, the children develop the skills for observation, comparison and judgment. The exercises promote the development of the senses using materials designed to assist the child in discriminating shape, size, color, sound, taste, scent and texture. Each set of materials isolates a single quality or sense and draws attention to increasingly fine sensorial distinctions. These activities also contain many indirect preparations for later work in language and mathematics.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Labyrinth - What is a Labyrinth?</image:title>
<image:caption>The labyrinth is an archetype, a divine imprint, found in all religious traditions in various forms around the world. By walking the labyrinth, a design laid in or on the ground, we are rediscovering a long-forgotten mystical tradition that is being reborn in modern times. The 40 foot labyrinth in the photo here is the one laid in the floor of the Chartres Cathedral in France around 1200 AD. It is in the nature of an archetype for its origin to be obscure, so no one really knows when or where labyrinths were first used. We do know that they were found at sites around the world, such as the 4,000 year old labyrinth on Crete, stone labyrinths in Scandinavia, and ancient representations in India and China.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Labyrinth - History of the St. Dunstan’s Community Labyrinth</image:title>
<image:caption>The Labyrinth was created in 2018 as a community offering to support one’s journey toward a more grounded state. Lauren Leonoff presented the idea of a community Labyrinth to then rector, Rob Fisher, as a way to help people return to themselves through walking meditation. After reading Walking a Sacred Path by Lauren Artress, Lauren Leonoff felt compelled to create a more formal labyrinth as opposed to the original design of river rocks placed on the ground.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Labyrinth</image:title>
<image:caption>Understanding the sacred geometry and importance of the layout, Lars Howlett, a professional labyrinth contractor, was hired by the School and the Church to design and install the labyrinth. Taking into account the cardinal directions and the sun and moon phases throughout the year, the labyrinth and its entrance was determined in accordance with the patterns of nature. Like anything that takes time, observing the construction process was a gift in and of itself for our children. They watched as the dirt was leveled, the weed cloth laid, and the bricks hauled in.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Labyrinth</image:title>
<image:caption>Upon completion, we inaugurated the labyrinth with an all-school ceremony, and it has since become integral to our community. It's used for birthday celebrations, yoga sessions, moonwalks, our Halloween parade, and end-of-year ceremonies, and the wider Monterey community uses it daily.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A quieting of the mind A grounding and centering of the self A sense of being healed Increased unity and wholeness, on both individual and community levels An increased awareness of self, relationship to others, and to Universal Love. A vehicle for God’s voice to deepen our understanding of the mystery of ourselves, the Universe, and internal wisdom. An opportunity to move out of Chronos time into Kairos time, from clock time to dream time, into a state in which we can be non-judgmental and receive and accept what arises within us.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Labyrinth - How do we walk it?</image:title>
<image:caption>Before you begin the walk, take a moment to reflect on where you are in your life and what you are seeking. This will help orient you. You may pose a question or wondering that you want to work on as you walk the labyrinth: open-ended questions, not questions that require a yes or no answer. You may choose a word, phrase, or mantra to repeat as you walk. Take a slow breath before you enter the labyrinth to help center you as you begin to walk with deliberate steps.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Labyrinth</image:title>
<image:caption>The labyrinth offers a beautiful metaphor for life, with its twists and turns providing quiet wisdom. In our fast-paced world, it serves as a reminder to ground ourselves in the present moment. This aligns with Montessori principles, where slow, deliberate movements in the classroom help children calm their bodies, and thoughtful, silent lessons provide meditative experiences of wonder.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our History - Transformation to a Montessori environment</image:title>
<image:caption>After 12 years of teaching at an AMI Primary Montessori School in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, Lauren Leonoff returned home to Carmel Valley in 2017 to help transition St. Dunstan's from a traditional preschool to a Montessori School. During that first year, she transformed a classroom for 10 two-year-olds into a Montessori environment, teaching in the mornings and co-directing with our founder, Elizabeth Buche, in the afternoons. Parents were able to see the distinct physical differences between the Montessori and traditional classroom setups and observe how the Montessori approach supported their child's independence. Lauren also had the opportunity to discuss the benefits of Montessori education with them, which supported the transition of the school.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our History</image:title>
<image:caption>Since 2017, we have made several significant improvements to our facilities. We've added two bathrooms to our Primary classrooms, updated our Pre-Primary bathroom for better visibility and accessibility for our youngest students, and replaced the carpet throughout the school with laminate flooring. We've also added a school library with locally sourced updated books, created outdoor access to a bathroom from the playground, built two pergolas for shade in the yards, added windows to our interior doors for improved visibility, incorporated pocket doors in two rooms, and expanded our lower yard play area and fence line.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our History</image:title>
<image:caption>As we emerged from the collective trauma of the pandemic, some forced changes became silver linings as we adapted to a new way of operating. We had the opportunity to expand a classroom, and no longer offering an infant program allowed us to create a dedicated nap room. What was once a classroom is now a staff room, providing our teachers with a space for their physical and mental well-being. Like anything in life, challenges often present opportunities for growth.</image:caption>
